Volvo S60 Android Auto

Adding Android Auto to the ageing S60.

Getting Started

For a while now, I have had no phone mount or SatNav in my car. I like the clean look, but it can be a bit annoying when you quickly need to look up directions, or make a call.

I wanted something that would look stock, but still give me all the modern conveniences. I wanted to control it using the cars existing controlls.

This page contains all the information I have found, including sources, and is as much for my reference as anyone elses.

Melbus

Melbus is a protocol created by Mitsubishi (The manufacturer of this era's Volvos' stock head units) and is used for interfacing with peripherals. It goes beyond what most CD changer interfaces do, by having support for many different types of device (CD, MD, SAT, DAB, etc.), as well being a multinode type protocol, allowing multiple devices to opperate on the same bus without treading on each others' toes. It has all the usual support for FF/RW commands, play/pause, etc. also.

If I wanted to interface with my cars exising controls, this seemed like a good place to start. Luckily there had been quite a lot of progress made in reverse engineering of this protocol, to the point where there are open source boards and Arduino sketches which pretty much work out of the box.
